650W and 700W Solar Panels: Model Comparison, Sizes and Prices

We compared four 650–720 W panels sold in Ukraine on size, weight, efficiency, current and price per watt, using the manufacturers' datasheets. A 700 W panel is not more efficient, just bigger, and it doesn't win on every roof.

OBZOR editorial

Comparing solar panel sizes in an indoor warehouse, where a worker measures the width of a module with a tape measure

In short

  • A 700 W panel is not more efficient; it is simply bigger. The 700–720 W models measure 2384 × 1303 mm and weigh 37.5–38.3 kg, while the 650 W ones measure 2382 × 1134 mm and weigh 28.5–32.7 kg. A square metre of the 650 W LONGi panels delivers 241 W, against 225–232 W for the 700–720 W Trina and Jinko.
  • A watt costs almost the same. In one Ukrainian shop on 27 October 2026, the four models in the comparison cost 5 050–5 760 UAH apiece, or 7.8–8.2 UAH per watt (cash price).
  • Large panels win in the inverter string. Voltage is similar in both classes, so 8–9 panels fit in a string for a 500 V input. But nine 720 W panels make 6.5 kW, while nine 650 W panels make 5.2–5.9 kW. The downside is a current above 17 A, which not every inverter accepts.
  • Bifacial doesn't help everywhere. On a flat roof with a light-coloured surface, bifacial panels produced up to 22.6% more energy in a study by the Australian National University. On a pitched roof, where the panel sits almost flush, count only on the front-side output.

Which models we compare

We took two 650 W-class panels and two 700 W-class panels sold by the Ukrainian shop Sunshop on 27 October 2026 and compiled their specifications from the manufacturers' datasheets:

  • LONGi Hi-MO X10 LR7-72HVH-650M: monofacial, single glass. BC cells: all contacts are on the back, so the front surface catches more light.
  • LONGi Hi-MO 9 LR8-66HYD-650M: bifacial, glass on both sides, also BC.
  • Trina Solar Vertex N TSM-700NEG21C.20: bifacial, with large 210 mm cells using i-TOPCon technology.
  • Jinko Solar Tiger Neo JKM720N-66HL5-BDV: a bifacial TOPCon panel the same size as the Trina.

Prices are from Sunshop, 27 October 2026, cash. For non-cash payment via a sole proprietor (FOP) the shop adds 9–18%, and for legal entities with VAT, 15–20%. The current Trina NEG21C.20 datasheet (2025 version) starts at 715 W. Its size, weight, warranty and temperature coefficient are the same as on the shop's listing for the 700 W model, and we took the voltage and current of the 700 W version specifically from the shop's listing.

Solar panel sizes: from 400 to 720 W

Most modern panels are 1134 mm wide, and power grows with length. The exception is the 700 W class on large 210 mm cells: it is wider, at 1303 mm. We compiled the sizes below from the panel listings in the Sunshop catalogue as of 27.10.2026. Check your model's datasheet for its exact size.

Note that “650 W” is not a single size. The 650 W LONGi is 2382 mm long, while the JA Solar JAM72D42-650 is 2465 mm. If your roof layout has already been worked out, don't swap the model for one “with the same power” without checking the size.

When a bigger panel pays off

Limited roof: 650 W wins more often

Take, for example, a roof slope 7 m wide and 5 m high, and lay the panels in portrait in two rows. Edge clearances required by the mounting system are not taken into account here. 650 W panels 1134 mm wide fit 6 per row, 12 in total, which is 7.8 kW. Panels 1303 mm wide fit 5 per row, so 10 in total and 7.0–7.2 kW. On the same roof the smaller panel gives more power: it has higher efficiency (24.1% vs 22.5–23.2%), and the narrow format fills the width better. On another roof it may be the other way round, so work out the layout for the specific dimensions.

Installation: 1303 mm wide and 38 kg

A 700 W panel is 5–10 kg heavier and its area is 15% larger (3.11 m² vs 2.70 m²). LONGi and Jinko give the same permissible load in their datasheets: 5400 Pa on the front and 2400 Pa on the back. But a larger area takes a greater total force from snow and wind, so rails, clamps and fixing spacing are calculated for the specific panel. Lifting a 38 kg, 1.3 m wide panel onto a roof takes at least two people.

Inverter string: this is where 700 W really wins

Panels in a string are connected in series, so their voltages add up. In frost a panel's voltage rises, and the open-circuit voltage of the whole string (Voc) must not exceed the inverter's maximum input. For example, for Deye SUN-3.6…10K-SG05LP1-EU-SM2-P hybrid inverters it is 500 V, with an MPPT operating range of 150–425 V. We calculated how many panels fit in such a string at −25 °C, using Voc and the Voc temperature coefficient from the datasheets. The minimum temperature for your region is set by the system designer.

ModelVoc, VVoc at −25 °C, VPanels per string up to 500 VString power, kWOperating current Imp, A

Jinko JKM720N-66HL5-BDV49.0455.296.4817.61

Nine panels give 490–497 V, right up against 500 V, so a cautious designer may install eight. But the conclusion doesn't change: large panels have the same voltage at a higher current, so one string carries 8–25% more power. For large plants that means fewer strings, cables and inverter inputs. This is exactly how Trina explains the benefit of the format in its datasheet.

The flip side is current. The operating current of 700–720 W panels is 17.3–17.6 A. The same Deye line has a maximum operating current of 18 A or 32 A per tracker, depending on the model. In other words, it's a tight fit, and an input rated for a lower current will clip the power. On top of that, bifacial panels over a light surface give even more: according to the Jinko datasheet, with 135 W/m² falling on the back side, the operating current of the JKM720N reaches 19.43 A. Before buying 700 W panels, check their current against your inverter's specification sheet.

Monofacial or bifacial panel

A bifacial panel has glass on both sides and catches light reflected from the surface beneath it with its back side. How much weaker the back is than the front is shown by the bifaciality coefficient. According to the datasheets, it is 75 ± 5% for the LONGi Hi-MO 9 and 80 ± 5% for Trina and Jinko. How much energy this adds depends on what is under the panel and how high it is mounted. Trina promises 10–20% depending on the reflectivity of the surface. LONGi shows in its datasheet that with a 10% rear-side gain, a 645 W panel delivers 710 W.

The biggest gain comes from ground mounting, carports or flat roofs with tilted racking. A study by the Australian National University published in the journal Energy Conversion and Management showed that on flat roofs bifacial panels can produce up to 22.6% more energy than monofacial ones, and that a light-coloured roof reflects more. On a pitched roof the panel sits a few centimetres above dark roofing, and almost no light reaches the back side. The study has no figures for this kind of installation, so for a pitched roof count only the front-side power.

That is why the monofacial LONGi Hi-MO X10 makes sense for a pitched roof: its efficiency is the same (24.1%), it is 4.2 kg lighter (28.5 vs 32.7 kg), and the product warranty in its datasheet is 15 years versus 12. Bear in mind, though, that the shop listing for this model states 12 years, so confirm the warranty period with the seller. For the ground, carports or flat roofs, go for bifacial models.

What the table shows:

  • There is almost no difference between the classes. Panels in stock at Sunshop cost 8.0–8.6 UAH per watt, both 650 W and 700–720 W (the exception is AIKO, at 9.1 UAH). The cheapest items (6.9–7.8 UAH/W) happened to be out of stock on the day we checked.
  • The difference between shops is bigger than between models. The same power cost 9–12 UAH per watt in another shop. Before comparing models, compare prices in several shops and find out whether the price includes VAT.
